I have been a priest since 1998. I served churches in the Diocese of Mississippi for twenty years: Rector of Calvary Episcopal Church, Cleveland, Mississippi; Vicar at St. John's Episcopal Church, Aberdeen; Associate Rector at Chapel of the Cross in Madison; and Rector of The Episcopal Church of the Advent in Sumner, Mississippi. I retired from full-time parish ministry in 2018 and moved to Oxford, Mississippi, with my husband John.
Before I became a priest, I did a bunch of other things. I practiced law with my father, in Greenville, Mississippi; I taught Freshman Composition at the University of Mississippi; I directed the Legal Writing Program at University of Mississippi School of Law. In 1994, I became a Postulant for Holy Orders in the Diocese of Mississippi. I attended Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, from 1995 until I graduated in 1998, receiving an M.Div. degree. I grew up in Greenville, Mississippi, and attended public schools. I am a "cradle Episcopalian," having been baptized and confirmed at St. James Episcopal Church in Greenville. I am still canonically resident in Mississippi, even though I am now serving in the Diocese of Southwest Florida. I got my B.A. from The University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee; my J.D. from Tulane Law School in New Orleans, Louisiana; and a Master's in English from the University of Mississippi.
I have been married for 25 year (almost 26!) to John M. Czarnetzky. We moved to Naples in the summer of 2021, when John became Dean and President of Ave Maria School of Law (AMSL) in Naples. John is a lifelong Catholic, so working at a truly Catholic law school is a dream come true for him. He feels a real calling to this work. We live around the corner from St. Monica's, in the Vineyards. (The law school campus is there; it is separate from Ave Maria University which is located in the town of Ave Maria.). We live on campus in the Vineyards. I served as an Assisting Priest at St. Monica's on a very part-time basis from November 2021 to January 2024.
We travel as much as our schedules permit. Before becoming Dean of AMSL, John was a professor for nearly thirty years at University of Mississippi School of Law, teaching courses in bankruptcy, civil procedure, and intellectual property. He also taught for many years in the Sally M. Barksdale Honors College at the University of Mississippi.
The length of this Interim Ministry at St. Monica's depends on when the next Rector is called. The term will be probably more than one year, but no more than two years at the most. My commitment is to walk with you all through this in-between time, focusing on worship, preaching, and pastoral care. I will step in and try to keep us moving us forward, as we discern where God might be calling St, Monica's in the months and years to come. It is an honor to be called as your Interim Rector! I look forward to serving in this capacity from August 15, 2025, until a new Rector is called.
When John finishes his time at AMSL, we plan to move back to Oxford, Mississippi.
